Examples from Sunni Hadith where Muhammad taught unsanitary or unclean practices
*Keep in mind that water is a limited resource, but nowhere do we find Muhammad saying "Because we are short on water...". Not to mention that if the water was dirty he could have allowed them to do tayamum (dry ablutions). Instead he just keeps telling them go ahead!
If a dog licks from your plate you have to wash it SEVEN times? But how about just once with soap? Why such a weird obsession with dogs?

That being said, there are some commendable teachings in the hadith as well. For example this one:

Many Muslims do not realize that the modern form of these teachings is very different. The requirement for cleaning yourself after taking a dump is to use an odd number of stones. Water is optional. Now it has become prevalent and is assumed is a requirement, but it wasn't.
As well, in Muhammads time, they all used to do wudhu (ablutions) from a shared container. They used to reuse leftover water from a bath for wudhu as well. You can't blame them since they were in a desert, but this is hardly what you would call divine teachings!

Muhammad never taught his companions the very simple rule of using soap or boiling water before consuming. This shows that he really didn't have god telling him what to do, but was making his own rules using Jewish teachings and local customs for reference.
Why is it that in Islam women cannot pray while menstruating? What gets in the way of their prayers when they are bleeding? Nothing. There's no good reason for this rule. It's simply Muhammad thinking period blood was unclean (like in Judaism)
Many of the rules in Islam and other religions are made to get people in the mode of obedience. It's a form of thought control - telling people what to eat, how to eat, what to drink, how to drink, how to wash, how not to wash etc. The same thing is done in the army.
In conclusion, Islam doesn't teach superior cleanliness. It teaches ritual purity. There is a big difference.
