A thread of key findings from new @pewresearch report on son preference & religion in India by @YunpingTong: https://t.co/UqEUViuOnk India's sex ratio at birth has been moving toward balance in recent years

pewresearch.org/religion/2022/…

The natural sex ratio at birth is about 105 males per 100 females. 2001: 130 boys born to Sikh mothers for every 100 girls. Male bias among Sikhs has since reduced to 110:100. Male biased ratios declined among Hindus & Muslims. Natural sex ratio at birth among Christians.

We estimate 9 million girls were not born due to sex-selective abortion in India from 2000-2019. Hindus are 80% of India's population but account for 87% of "missing" girls Sikhs are <2% of the population but account for 5% of "missing" girls
